being a danny chan fan, we don't confess of having all his CDs. whatever compilations available in the market are never complete. take for example, his early hit "first love" 【初戀】 has always been glaringly missing from all assortment of compilations that warner has ever released.

now, CDRAMA took the initiative to come up with a compilation that ends all compilation: danny chan 101 (what corny title!) yes, this is superb! 6 CDs for a puny RM55. it contains all the songs you ever dream of from danny chan, including first love, of course.

we screamed ourselves crazy when we saw this and ended up buying a few copies!

p/s eventho' it is supposed to be remastered, the sound quality is quite thin but ah, don't complain la!

再開音樂會 何蕓妮唱酬三級跳

（吉隆坡23日訊）首席執行員羅溢平表示其公司推廣中文爵士樂，而何蕓妮亦參與了前面的兩部曲，來到舊曲新唱的第三部曲《街燈下的寂寞難耐》，同樣由何蕓妮挑大梁，這次並伙拍阿飛以及阿蟲演出劉家昌以及李宗盛的經典歌曲。

被問到唱酬是否有跟着漲的何蕓妮說：“有比之前好一點，這是應該的，當做一個獎勵，要不然會停着不動。”老闆羅溢平在旁笑指其唱酬三級跳。對於 這次演出會否感到有壓力 她說：“沒有上兩次的壓力來得大，上次是一個人撐完全場，這次有了經驗，而且和鄭澤湘也有了默契，而這次也加入阿飛和阿蟲演出。”

談到這次的選曲，何蕓妮表示會選唱劉家昌《梅蘭梅蘭我愛你》、李宗盛《寂寞難耐》以及一些李宗盛寫給女歌手的歌曲。而同樣在現場的阿蟲，則表示這是第一次參與演出，他將會負責多詮釋李宗盛的歌曲。

《街燈下的寂寞難耐》音樂會將於3月10日，晚上8點，在Bentley Music Auditorium舉行，票價分為RM125以及RM85。

何芸妮繼任擔綱主唱，唱酬比之前獨撐《靡靡之音：鄧麗君之舊曲新唱》3級跳！她笑著不願透露實際數額，說：「有增加也是應該的啊，我覺得那是老闆給我的獎勵，不然我就不動了。」 公司首席執行員表明，之前連開3場《靡》讓公司首度賺錢，故此再接再厲開辦以劉家昌與李宗盛的歌曲為主軸的《街》。

對於音樂會的票房，何芸妮與阿蟲都表示頗有壓力，不過何芸妮表示，這次因為有阿蟲和阿飛一起同台，演出上的壓力反倒沒有之前一人那麼重。她說：「只是我覺得觀眾再看我的演出，應該會對我有更上一層的要求，所以這次舞蹈也更多了。」 第一次參與大型演出的阿蟲在這次的演出中，將著重在演繹李宗盛的經典歌曲，雖然他頻頻表示很緊張，但與他認識多年的何芸妮，卻對他與阿飛信心十足，更贊阿蟲：「他總能把歌曲演繹出自己的特色，讓人都忘了原唱是誰，而且吉他彈得很好。」

（吉隆坡23日讯）“旧曲新唱”系列口碑票房唱佳，Pop Pop Music 再下一城举办《街灯下的寂寞难耐》。何芸妮这次夥拍阿虫和阿飞一起演唱，压力可以摊分成三份，所以压力不那么大。不过最重要的是，何芸妮“爵女”的地位越来越受肯定，唱酬还三级跳呢！

继《霏霏之音：邓丽君之旧曲新唱》大收旺场，而被誉为新一代“爵女”的何芸妮，这次再担任该音乐会的灵魂人物，询及她的唱酬是否跟着水涨船高，何芸妮不敢回答，后来老板在旁大呼“唱酬三级跳！”她笑言：“肯定有多了些，这是一个bonus，不然我就一直停在原地不动咯。”

主办单位更表示去年办了六场音乐会，几乎每场都爆满，其中一场更有超过1000人捧场，堪称是大马爵士音乐界的奇迹。除了反应好，该音乐会也有可观的盈利，让他们对于大马爵士音乐界更有信心。

夥阿虫和阿飞一起唱

这次《街灯下的寂寞难耐》将主打70年代音乐教父刘家昌及80年代乐坛教父李宗盛，何芸妮、阿虫及阿飞将会轮番上阵，将两位大师的音乐作品“爵士化”。

上两次音乐会票房都大丰收，问及他们是否会有票房压力？何芸妮直言：“这个我倒不担心，我会注 重在表演部分，经过之前的表演，我对自己的表现更有要求，不想让身旁的朋友失望。”而第一次加入阵容的阿虫就大呼压力很大：“我真的很怕自己会拖累你们 啊！”何芸妮闻言立刻猛赞他：“他一开口唱歌，会让你有忘记原唱者是谁！”让阿虫暂时放下心来。

公司做了10年首次賺到錢，何蕓妮唱酬比之前更好，身價更是3級跳，可是她卻謙虛表示只是獎勵，反而會繼續加油，做得更好！

Pop Pop Music 在近年大膽改革，轉型以“舊曲新唱”的概念，引領大馬人瞭解不同年代的經典名曲。“舊曲新唱”的音樂會是以爵士（Jazz）的風格，把中文歌曲改造成爵士曲風，以中西混合的口味，打造不一樣的音樂。

由于之前兩場音樂會都獲得不錯的反應，得到不少贊助商資助，所以將陸續辦第3場。首席執行員羅溢平說：“從來沒想過第2場音樂會竟然會破千，也讓公司首次賺錢，還能趁機發揚爵士音樂，讓大家更能瞭解爵士樂。”

這次《街燈下的寂寞難耐》音樂會，主要是把七八十年代的音樂人劉家昌及李宗盛的經典名曲改編成爵士曲風，再重新演唱。本地歌手何蕓妮繼續聯同阿飛及阿蟲，擔任音樂會的主唱，增添更多爵士元素。

壓力比上次少

何蕓妮被問到演唱兩位大師的名曲可有壓力時，她說：“這次沒上次那么大壓力，況且劉家昌所製作的歌曲大部分都是女生唱，並不會覺得太難，反而會集中演繹的方式，把表演做得更好更多，有不一樣的演出方式。”

阿蟲覺得與本地大師級的音樂人合作壓力很大，加上是負責劉家昌的部分，因此他會多去瞭解，儘量把味道帶出來。

在音樂會上已確定的曲目包括李宗盛的《街燈下》、《寂寞難耐》及劉家昌的《一簾幽夢》、《梅蘭梅蘭我愛你》及去年當紅的《唸你》，這首歌將會以另類的方式演唱，其他則是林憶蓮、辛曉琪及陳淑樺的經典歌。

音樂會將在3月10日舉行，如果票房好的話，將會繼續辦更多場音樂會。

【记者会】中文爵士音乐在大马卷土重来，由何芸妮为首领演唱带领两位新歌手李振岚（阿蟲）和林振辉（阿飛）以「旧曲新唱」的方式，举行《街灯下的寂寞难耐》的演唱会。谈到唱酬，何芸妮被爆唱酬三级跳！

首 领何芸妮透露，由于上一场的《靡靡之音》大受好评，更在海外引起了无数荣誉。今年Pop Pop Music举办以爵士音乐为主的演唱会，分别会从新演绎70年代音乐教父刘家昌以及80年代乐坛教父李宗盛的经典名曲。何芸妮将会与两位默契搭档阿蟲和阿 飛会以全新的爵士方式呈献给大家。被问到唱酬是否有跟着起的何芸妮说：「有比之前好一点，这是应该的，当做一个奖励，要不然会停着不动。」

这次的演唱会，一律利用大马艺人演绎旧曲，是马来西亚从未试过的搭配。由于何芸呢在上次的演唱会获得好成绩，这次的她不担心票房，反而着重在表演方面，接下来她会努力练习表演，先把票房放在一旁。她更是力挺好友阿蟲歌唱动人，会令人忘记那首歌的原唱到底是谁。

（吉隆坡23日訊）繼上兩場爵士音樂會的好口碑後，Pop Pop音樂公司再辦“舊曲新唱”系列音樂；這次依然由上場音樂會之一的歌手何芸妮當主唱之一。音樂公司老闆坦言，上次舉辦的音樂會收入不錯，這次也替何芸妮加價開唱，而且是“三級跳”呢！

詢及可有票房壓力？何芸妮表示，“一定有，但不應該（把注意力）集中在票房，只是歌迷的要求會比上次更高。”主持人逗鄭澤相說，“若有多的票，你會包下嗎？”鄭澤相皺眉頭搖搖頭，露出不願意包票的表情。老闆承諾，若音樂會反應熱烈，不排除加場的可能性。

following the success of the "chinese oldies revival" concert series last year, local music label pop pop music brings a new program with star performer winnie ho anchoring the show once again. pop pop music's CEO admitted to making good profits last year and as a result winnie ho's salary has also tripled. winnie ho, when asked about this, coyly admitted  "yes, this is well deserved".

this new concert program entitled "when liu jia chang meets lee zong sheng", is self-explanatory. the stellar musical team led by music director tay cher siang would cover pop classics from these two godfathers of chinese pop. winnie ho herself would be aided by two male singers, namely jeffery lim (ah fei from 2v1g) and worm lee, two future stars currently being groomed by pop pop music.

the amazing trio that brought the house down

to those who missed last night's leslie cheung tribute, no words would suffice to describe how electrifying it was.

we have always been encouraging people to go for live gigs or concerts, instead of just buying the CD and sit home and listen.

it was simply incredible how ah fei, winnie and ah worm again tore the house down with another sensational performance.

yes, we wouldn't bother to write about it. we just hope you would join us next time!

又爆燈！[thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, monica!]

many people still don't know about NBT

what an incredible night it was! 

ah fei, winnie and ah worm practically tore the house town with one of their best performance ever! true, the crowd (mostly new to NBT) was sedate but towards the end, they let themselves lose and stood up to shake their bodies in sync with winnie's "stand up"!

everyone sang well but the one that took the cake was ah fei, who not only impressed those who are new to him, he has also asserted himself well to assure those who love him will continue to do so. his voice perfectly suits leslie cheung's music. his rendition of 【今生今世】 is worth a million dollars. what brilliant singing!

winnie also shone brightly, especially with 【追】, her heavenly voice (especially her high notes) won her plenty of praises and admiration. this is the hallmark of a mature singer who can command the stage.

ah worm also did well. he and ah fei were totally in contrast and neither outshines each other. ah worm has a deadpan humor and he looks good on stage. ah fei is more shy but when he sings, he wins you immediately. both of them partner winnie well. it gives a lot of room for different styles of duets between the two combinations: winnie+ah fei, winnie+ah worm. and this varied sytle of duets are the winning factor in both the tribute of danny chan and now the tribute of leslie cheung.

we can tell that almost everyone is impressed last night.

we are starting to show the world what pop pop music is capable of. many of the audience were first-time visitor to NBT last night and we bet they would come back again.

we look forward to another electrifying night tonight!

很累但很興奮 [tired but high]

everyone is dead serious in the listening session

making record is a tiring process, especially at the stage of post production.  the team gathered on thursday morning in pop pop resort to evaluate the final mix done by roger wang. and it happened that roger also was in kl, so it made things easier.

as great as the final mix was, we have some amendments here and there. but overall, cher siang is very pleased with roger's work, so are we.  this is a very musical mix, one tends to enjoy the music first and neglect the technical aspects.

maybe we will explain our choice of mastering engineer this time. as usual, our top choice, money permitting, is always the awe-inspiring mr. doug sax. but doug sax's mastering has this problem: it requires top notch hifi system to appreciate its glorious sound and not many people have such systems. we decided on our 2nd choice, keith yip, because of his wonderful work with bonnie lam "remembering danny chan" album. keith upgraded his studio hardware which included some expensive hifi cables. the sound of bonnie album is very accessible: it sounds great on a lot of systems, includng car audio and desktop systems.

since we have abandoned the pursuit of audiophile-approved sound and go instead for mass and popular appeal, keith yip's mastering makes a lot of sense. we want an album that anyone can play well regardless of his system.

song sequencing is another headache for us. because every song is a BIG song and practically every song is sung well by winnie, it makes it very difficult for us to choose. but fortunately, our vocal coach stefano thinks quite alike with myself and winnie and we decided to sequence based on certain criteria.

so, here are the good news as promised...
1) 忘記他，(forgetting him), teresa teng's cantonese classic, will be released in high-res AIFF download in this blog in about two weeks' time

2) 南海姑娘 (girl from south sea), a great song in samba rhythm, will be released for free in a free souvenir CD in one of local's Hi-Fi event.

things are running at madness speed at pop pop music, that's all we can update you now. do come to our "tribute to leslie cheung" gig this tuesday and wednesday! we promise to turn NBT upside down!
        

【靡靡之音】終於殺青 [finally!]

stefano, our vocal coach was relaxing after the final recording

we are so excited to launch the album and at the same time we wanted the most excellent product that we re-do two songs, the most difficult ones! actually it was winnie ho who insisted on the redo and the whole project was delayed one week because of this insistence on top-quality product.

and when this lady asks for re-do, she really does her homework and practice, so much so she could nail the song in just two takes!

last night was the final night of recording. we recorded "songbird", an original composition by tay cher siang, a song in remembrance of teresa teng. this is the most difficult song of it all, even a singer like winnie ho struggled the first time she sang it.

it took her 3 recording sessions, close to 5 hours to nail this song and the final outcome is hugely satisfying.

so, please count from now: one more month for post-production and you will get to listen and buy this album on or before 15th march 2012!

tragic ending to a super talent

the music world was sad  but definitely not stunned by the death of one of all-time-great female vocalists of modern times, whitney houston.

why must music be associated always with sex and drugs? it is not only a western phenomenon. it happens everywhere in the entertainment industry. just a couple of days ago, japanese-artiste-made-good-in-taiwan, makiyo, was found kicking and abusing a taxi driver with his boyfriend, after getting heavily drunk. she lied to the media but unbeknown to her, everything was recorded in video. makiyo can definitely kiss her career goodbye as she may be sentenced to 6-year jail term. remember our very won gary chow?

in her prime, whitney houston made mariah carey and charice look like wannabes. yet such amazing talent had to end tragically.

her career was practically going downhill the day she met rocker husband bobby brown. she couldn't stop taking drugs since.  the saddest part was when whitney tried to make a comeback in her career in recent years, she had totally lost that golden voice. fans abandoned her. she could not even hit the high notes she was known for. 

i remember a couple of years ago, whitney came to perform in KL and many people flocked to catch her live, save for a very learned music friend of mine, who coolly avoided the opportunity. his reason: "i have already seen her in her prime in the 80s, why now, when she has lost it?". smart answer indeed.    

we always educate our artistes to discipline and not over-indulge, especially when fame and wealth hit you.

we miss whitney's talents but not the way she handled her life. 

音樂會又來啦！ [another sensational concert!]

When Liu Jia Chang Meets Li Zong Sheng

The recent comeback of Chinese pop godfathers, Liu Jia Chang and Li Zong Sheng (Jonathan Lee) ,into the Chinese pop music scene only indicates one thing: Chinese pop in the 70s and 80s have more substance and is still well cherished and is way better than today’s overly commercialized Chinese pop.  

The structure of their music lends itself naturally to jazz re-arrangement. Our idea is to give it a pop/jazz treatment and some wicked twists, with the hope of revitalizing the music of these two great musicians.

Winnie Ho, our established Chinese Jazz sensation, together with Worm Lee and Jeffery Lim, our two guest male vocalists, would be the singers to carry out the vocal tasks. As usual, they are strongly backed by Tay Cher Siang’s WVC trio+1.

those who remember halo cafe and old china cafe at jalan balai polis will share this sad sentiment: jalan sultan of china town will be demolished to give away to a LRT station. how tragic that is!

many singers, including our bossa princess, who started their singing career at halo cafe in the late 90s, came together on 4th feb night, to raise awareness of this tragic destruction of a heritage. more than 2,000 people thronged the streets of china town to participate in the campaign....

we will never pack stadiums but we are just as happy packing bentley and NBT

the year 2011 was the significant year as we saw a surge in our fan base, after the 6 live concerts we did in bentley, ipoh and melaka and a couple of sell-out gigs in NBT.

we get to know the profile of our supporters more in depth and this augurs well for us as we expand, for it allows us to do a better and more focused target marketing. yes, we spend a lot of money and thoughts in marketing, branding and positioning.

the below profile of a fan may surprise many but  hey, we know him better and better.

he is...

1) of the aged 35-60 (well, there are really young ones in their 20s but they are minority)
2) earns well above RM5K a month
3) has no prejudice against local talents and local recordings (he does not worship foreign talents but give fair chance to local talents)
4) has no prejudice against cover versions. (because he knows jazz is all about doing covers and improvisations)
5) 70% english-educated, 20% bilingual and 10% chinese-educated
6) loves live music and hangs out in NBT, alexis, nero fico, DFP
7) open-minded, liberal and accepts all forms of music with creativity and modern touches
8) enjoys fine dining and all the good things in life
9) wants to see a local music label going international and make malaysians proud

and lastly,

10) when they buy our albums (they have all the titles), they buy in multiples to give to and influence their friends!

【靡靡之音】高分析档案下载 [high res AIFF download for winnie ho's album]

the interest generated in winnie's ho debut solo album so far is certainly encouraging. we think many people know what is winnie ho made of now. "the jazzy sounds of teresa teng" is gonna be another milestone for her, perhaps her career highest point.

winnie basically triple jumped in terms of improvement from 2v1g-1, to 2v1g-2 and to this debut solo album. she has come a long way. she has developed a solid identity in her voice, not to say her stage performance.

ok, the point is, we are willing to release one track, most likely teresa teng's cantonese hit "forgetting him" 【忘记他】 in high-res AIFF download for those who are into CAS. the reason we choose this song is because winnie's vocal is absolutely mesmerizing and also because the late salvador guerzo played a mean saxophone in this song.

so do watch out this space and please spread it to those who are interested!

this song is absolutely FOC. we do hope those who like it will eventually buy the CD. but we won't release the entire album in high-res la. :-)

浩气长存 [his music never dies]

that sensuous tone will be missed forever

how great a musician is, how much he has contributed to the art, how much he has won the hearts of fellow musicians and peers, how much he will be missed... all this will be known once he dies. in fact, a great musician never dies as his music will live on.

he is a the most humble and easy-going of musician, always willing to share and teach. he is a musician's musician. in tonight's memorial, we saw the peaceful looks on his face, it is as if he was most contended to leave as he had achieved all that he wanna achieved in his lifetime.

from now on, solianos "pusaka" album will be the music to remember him by. it is his present to all of us, and to the jazz community in malaysia.

 一个音乐人对音乐有没有贡献和真诚 对其他的音乐人有没有正面的影响 在他离开人世之后就可以知道。他一生谦卑 对音乐不弃不舍 他的血液 他的每一个细胞 都是音乐 他是音乐巨人 我们的偶像。

今晚的哀弔会 我们见了他安祥的遗容 他像是没有什么遗憾了。

压缩到要命 [compressed like crazy]

you wanna know what compression is: just listen to adele's "21".

my friend who only collects USA pressing (considered audiophile pressing) has a copy and i listened and get a clue of what today's recording engineers want and do.

this CD is highly compressed, has flat dynamics, noisy and is rough sounding.

i don't think it is an isolated case: many of today's recordings are meant for the ipod and ipad generation hence the need for loudness war.

we just feel sad that the demand of quality recording is long gone.
